It used to have value until the gold standard was removed in 1971 and replaced currency with the fiat system. Fiat means that there is no commodity backing up the currency; only the government’s promise of its value based on the country’s economic performance.

Now that’s kind of scary. We’ve seen economic performances in countries where inflation is double and triple digits: think Zimbabwe (193%), Venezuela (186%), Argentina (72%), Ukraine (20%).
